Anna-Maria Sommer is a graduate of Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’ in Berlin, where she lives and works. Her work explores the themes of self-liberation, intimacy, sexuality, abuse, as well as life’s extremes and antagonisms.
Sommer uses video, film, photography, installation and music combined with varied materials, including wood, steel, chains, feathers, meat, blood, knives, mirrors, living animals, ice, fire, water, spray cans and whatever else comes to her mind, as an extension of her work in performance.
She speaks of the synthesis of the arts and fancies the concept of hybrid art. Anna-Maria Sommer not only pushes the boundaries to their limits but goes further — expressing physically and metaphorically the process of self-liberation, which leads her to the conclusion that humanity finds its origin in a very demonic and animalistic abyss.
